There are two joints in the ankle, the tibiofibular joint (between the tibia and fibula) and the tibiotalar joint (between the tibiofibular joint and the talus).

Lateral Ankle sprain

Lateral Ankle sprain injury involving the three ligaments on the outside of the ankle.  Most common type of ankle sprain results from turning or rolling the ankle in with sports injuries, falls, or work related injuries.

Syndesmosis sprain (“high ankle sprain”)

This is an injury involving the soft tissue stabilizing the joint between the two leg bones (tibiofibular joint) at the ankle.  This less common type of ankle sprain can occur from the “turning the ankle out”, and can be associated with fractures around the ankle.
