Meniscus tear

Meniscus tear - fibrocartilage disc shaped structure which is a shock absorbing cushion between the end of the thigh bone and top of the leg bone. Sudden trauma or gradual degeneration can lead to a tearing of this structure.

Acute injuries typically occur in younger patients and can be associated with ligament or bone injuries. Degenerative tears typically occur in older patients and are the natural progression of the arthritic process in the knee. Signs/symptoms include pain, swelling, catching or locking sensation in the knee, and limited motion and function of the knee.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the level of symptoms and the age of the patient. Older patients with degenerative tears of the meniscus or smaller tears of the meniscus may improve with conservative or nonsurgical treatment options including physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and activity modification.

Surgery

Surgical intervention includes arthroscopic or open techniques to remove or repair the torn piece of meniscus.
