Trochanteric bursitis

Trochanteric bursitis – inflammation involving the bursa (“fluid sac”) underneath the hip abductor tendon (“brings the leg outward”) on the outside of the hip joint.  This condition can occur as an acute injury or more commonly from repetitive overuse.  Signs/symptoms include pain over the outside of the hip, weakness with hip abduction, and difficulty walking or running.

Treatment

Treatment is nonsurgical or conservative and includes steroid injections, anti-inflammatory medicines, and physical therapy to increase flexibility of the hip abductor tendon.
