Hamstring strain ("pulled hamstring")

Hamstring strain ("pulled hamstring") - injury involving the hamstring muscles in the back of the thigh that act to extend the hip joint. Typically occurs from a sudden contraction of the hamstring muscle while the knee is being straightened or the hip is being flexed. Signs/symptoms include pain in the back of the thigh, weakness with hip extension, and difficulty walking or running.

Treatment

Treatment is nonsurgical or conservative and includes rest, ice, compression, protected weight bearing, anti-inflammatory medicines, and physical therapy to rehab the hamstring muscles once the acute pain has improved.
